In Memory of "Mr. Malaco"
Roy Wooten was introduced to Malaco Records 34 years ago by the late Franklin D. Williams where he worked without pay for almost a year. He worked as the sound man for the Jackson Southernaires, and in Gospel Promotions at the studio. When not on the road, he worked in every capacity at Malaco Records. He knew all the components needed to make great hit records.
From Artists sound and production in the studio to label copies, photographs, one sheets and distribution. Roy would personally promote and distribute and market record releases on the road.
He was also on the Executive Board for the Mississippi Mass Choir and National Promotion Manager for the GMWA Announcers Guild.
Roy has achieved numerous awards over the years;
- GMWA Pioneers Award
- Malaco Distinguished Award
- GMWA Quartet Frank Williams Award
- American Gospel Quartet Frank Williams Award
- The Jackson Music Award
- Frank Williams Memorial Award
just to name a few.
Roy was the CEO of Exclesisa Booking Agency which is operated by his wife Esther Wooten.
Exclesisa represents renowned Artists such as;
- The Canton Spirituals
- Slim & The Supreme Angels
- Spencer Taylor & The Highway QC's
- Darrell McFadden
- Paul Porter
- The Anointed Jackson Sisters
- The Southern Sons
- Ms. Bee Oliver
- Jewell & Converted
Roy and Esther have three children, Miioka, Royriquez and Hadassah Roinell, and two grandchildren Mikayla & Mckenzie.
In April of 1997 Roy had colon cancer. After surgery he received chemotherapy for 52 weeks. This illness would have easily been enough to stifle most people's faith and spirit, but not Roy's. The grace of God, his strong faith and the faith and prayers of his family, Radio Announcers, Promoters, Liberal Trinity C.O.G.I.C. church family and his many brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the nation kept Roy going.
Roy's ability to bounce back with such resiliency only reaffirmed his strength in the Lord and shows we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
Music was his life, and without music it would've been hard to imagine "Mr. Malaco" doing anything else.
"God gets all the glory and praise for the things He is doing and has done in my life. With God, all things are possible to them that believe". Roy Wooten
